The newest addition to the Guitar Freak Workstation suite is the Theory Testing Station.

It’s geared towards developing the musician in the user. It’s better for the serious player to be a bigger musician than a player. Most of these tools are geared towards that – and I decided that tests in music notation, the knowledge of notes in chords, scales and their construction would be an essential tool.

MUSIC NOTE RECOGNITION
This will simply choose a note at random and ask you to name it. It’s basically a flash card system designed at introducing somebody to notes and their names.

CHORDS AND SCALES RECOGNITION
The goal of this is to recognize notes in a chord.
1. Select chord types on the far right list. Press import to place your selected chords in the Testing on List – or you can choose a preset. Highlighted in Blue, you can see I used Basic Chords. You can also make and save your own presets.
2. Choose a selection of root notes. If you’re a beginner – maybe start with just C.
3. Press Test. A chord will appear on the stave.
4. To name it, first select the note below.
5. Then go to the test box and select a chord you think it is.
6. Press “submit” to see if you got it right!

DEGREE RECOGNITION
Using exactly the same setting but choosing Degrees, you get presented with a single note and asked which degree (the spelling) of a chord or scale is.

RECALL FACTOR – BUILD FROM THE CHOOSEBOX
In this test, you’re asked to build a given chord or scale from scratch.

WHAT’S TO REASON TO USE THIS?

Knowing your chords and scale notes is a great way to choose notes on your neck that you may not normally choose. Also, if you’ve been using Sight-reader Master Extreme for a while, you will know the notes on your neck.

• Most jazz lines launch from the 3 or 7 of the current chord. It would be cool if you knew what those notes were without any mental fatigue.
• You can work out the notes in that weird shape you found and give it a chord name.

There are a lot of other reasons why you’d like to know what notes are in the current scale or chord.

I’m sure that this tool will make you a great musician rather than just a player!
