Earning money as a guitarist is a dream job. Session
work is where you find a well paying job - but it doesn't
take very long before you realize that the guitarists
(and bass guitarists) getting all the well paying sessions
are the ones who can read music.
There are a couple of ways to read music - and most of them require logging hours on your guitar, reading sheet music. Half the time you end up merely memorizing the sheet music rather than reading it - and all you're doing is using the music for cues!
Enter SightReader for the Guitar.
This software is designed by a guitarist - for guitarists. Upon opening the program, you will see 2 bars (measures) before you (musicians usually like to see where to go next in the next bar). So straight away it looks familiar.
It is highly functional in that you can easily change the settings to suit your sight-reading ability.
For the beginner, you can be tested on one string at the 1st position (down at the nut) and it will only - but randomly - choose the notes that you can reach. Any position up to the 10th fret can be chosen (but only available in the registered version). Once the beginner gets comfortable on that string, he/she can select, in the string-choice menu to add another string. It's that simple!
Each of the notes that will appear in the current bar will be named in boxes above each note - so either you, or your students, can identify that note. These can be hidden to test the reader.
The play stop buttons are what you'd find on any CD player or tape deck. Don't know where the notes are? Simply click on the "Show Neck" box and you'll see the neck as well as a marker for the position you're currently playing in!
The notes that SightReader will choose shall be only those notes in the same Keysignature that you have chosen - until you un-tick the diatonic tick-box.
Then you see a menu appear, where you may choose, how often sharps and flats (notes that are not in the keysignature) SightReader will throw into the music.
Whatever your sight-reading ability, SightReader will make you better - in the quickest time - streamlining your hours and getting you those abilities which will make you the envy of your peers! Let's face it - there aren't enough hours in the day to do all that you want to do - same with me! This is why I designed and created it!
Do I use it? Yes I do! I have been a professional guitarist for over 10 years - playing for 17 years and teaching for 15 of those. I had been fortunate that most of my session work to date was doing solos and reading chord charts for other people's albums - but I know that the bigger bucks lie in reading music on the fly.
I also have a desire to play violin sonatas
on the guitar. I steal the ideas and add them to my
solo toolbox.
It would take me a long time before I would remember the piece in my head - after getting it from a combination of the sheet music and the album - before I could nail it and practice it.
After only a couple of hours on SightReader for
the Guitar I could play all the notes on the 5th
fret position (Low note being "A" and top
note being a high "C") in the Key of F (1
flat). Admittedly it was only up to a tempo of 50 bpm
(Yes - you can easily alter the tempo). Those notes
were flying at me randomly.
I then pulled the Bach violin concerto sheet music
from my filing cabinet and started to play. I WAS SHOCKED!
After SightReader's heavy-duty random selection of notes,
Bach's music was like a walk in the park! My fingers
were going to the notes with hardly any conscious effort
on my part! I could hear the music in real-time and
enjoy just listening to it while my fingers took care
of the notes!
